Food and Location Photography in Birmingham with BTP

Having covered a few of BTP’s other cafés previously, I was asked to head up to Birmingham to shoot food photograph for their new dishes. I also headed over to another of their cafés nearby to shoot a few location photos there too. You can see some of my work on their homepage (as of April 2015) with more populating their brochures and marketing in general.

Family Photography with Matilda

Around two and a half years ago myself and Laura photographed Lauren and Steve’s wedding in Wiltshire, and as with many marriages they tend to eventually end up as families. Cue Matilda, born just a few weeks ago, a healthy bundle of joy and source of lack of sleep for her rightly proud and doting parents. I popped over to take some very natural, documentary family photographs while they went about the typical tasks in their new chapter of life.

I wasn’t looking to capture just smiles, colourful toys or letter blocks spelling out her name. For most, the truth of life and raising a family is one of difficult times, stress, tiredness and uncertainty, done ultimately out of raw love. I look to concentrate on the reality and the emotions of life, so that in twenty years there’s no façade filter, the photos are a rich and deep reminder of those early days with their daughter. In this way, I hope to provide a thoughtful set of photos that are sensitive and personal family keepsakes. Photos that may be brought out at her own wedding to smiles and laughter of her friends (sorry Matilda!) but leave her parents reminiscing the realities of those early days together.

Aimee & Ian London pre-wedding photography

We spent a few hours with Aimee and Ian in central London the other week, they asked for us to capture very natural and relaxed photography before their wedding early next year.

The Gherkin is an important location for them as it was where they met on their first date, so we decided to start here. I wanted to capture not only Aimee and Ian at the Gherkin, but also bring London in to the photo by including some buildings in the background and in the reflection on the Gherkin itself. Continuing on from the Gherkin we made our way to Leadenhall Market and then London Bridge to capture the feeling and busyness of London as well as the famous bridge itself of course.

For the last location, we jumped in to a London cab and arrived at their local wine bar which holds fond memories for both Ian and Aimee. For this scene I made use of passing pedestrians to emphasise that feeling of being isolated in a moment together, with London carrying on around them with its usual frantic pace.

An excellent day out and I’m looking forward to seeing them both at their wedding soon.

Jen & Jo’s Wedding at the Town Hall in London

Jen and Jo chose an amazing venue in the east end of London called the Town Hall Hotel. Walking around you’ll come across everything from a moose head on the wall made from carpet to an old dentists chair just sitting down a hallway like that’s ok. There’s a range of artwork and pieces dotted about the hotel, you could almost miss them as sometimes they’re seemingly placed as part of the fitments.

The ceremony was held in the council chamber, I’ve had to hold back on the amount of photos of the council chamber simply because I loved it so much. With the excellent hanging lights and traditional rows of seating, everyone enjoyed an excellent viewpoint of the emotional ceremony. Both Jen and Jo looked stunning in their beautiful dresses and the ceremony was an intimate and heartfelt affair.

Cocktails were shaken (and stirred) for the reception and the wedding guests mingled among each other. We took the newlyweds away for a few couple photos before heading back for the wedding breakfast at possibly (definitely) the longest dining table we’ve seen at a wedding.

After the wedding breakfast and the cake being cut, the dancing ensued. Again, we grabbed Jen and Jo for some alone time with just the four of us to experiment with some of the excellent locations the Town hall had to offer.

Jen is also a wedding photographer, check out her website. It’s always nerve-wracking when photographing for another photographer but it was nothing but a pleasure, thank you both for such a great day.

Henley.
